News / RISE-Health Supports Course Dedicated to Biomedical Research at FMUP
The training course will take place between 18th and 20th February 2026.
The RISE-Health research unit will organise, together with the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP), a course focused on experimental rigour in the design, data analysis and communication of basic biomedical research results.
Under the title “Experimental Rigor in Basic Biomedical Research Design, Data Analysis and Reporting,” the continuing education course will take place from 18 to 20 February 2026 at the FMUP Centre for Medical Investigation and will be taught by researchers Martin Michel (University of Mainz), Dora Pinho (FMUP | RISE-Health) and Ana Charrua (FMUP | RISE-Health).
The course is designed to provide researchers with essential knowledge in experimental design and statistical analysis, with a particular focus on improving the reliability, robustness and reproducibility of pre-clinical studies. Through a programme combining lectures, debates and practical sessions, participants will be able to recognise and reduce bias, apply appropriate statistical methods and adhere to best practices in data integrity and communication.
Upon completing the training, trainees will be able to conduct statistically sound research initiatives and contribute to more reliable scientific outcomes.
Access to the ‘Experimental Rigor in Basic Biomedical Research Design, Data Analysis and Reporting’ training course is limited and requires payment of a fee. To find out more about this course or to clarify any questions, please contact us by email: erbbr@med.up.pt

Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Mainz (Germany). He specialises in technical quality and reproducibility of non-clinical data and related training strategies. He is a member of the European Quality In Preclinical Data (EQIPD) organisation, which promotes rigour in the design, conduct, analysis and documentation of animal experiments, and is a member of the Partnership for Assessment and Accreditation of Scientific Practice (PAASP) network. He is the lead lecturer for the Statistics for Experimental Life Scientists and True Data – How to Produce High Quality Research Results modules.
Affiliated Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP) and researcher at the RISE-Health unit, in the Clinical Translation of Molecular Targets and Innovative Medicines Thematic Line. She has been a member of the FMUP Animal Welfare Body (ORBEA-FMUP) since 2019. She has been responsible for the Ethics, Experimental Design and Scientific Writing module of the Doctoral Programme in Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Porto since 2020, and has been teaching the Procedure and Project Design modules (levels 1 and 2) in the Laboratory Animal Sciences Course at FMUP since 2021.
Principal Investigator at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP) and member of the RISE-Health research unit, in the Neuroscience Thematic Area. She has extensive experience in translational research using animal models. She was co-leader of a work package for a European project on improving animal models for the study of chronic pelvic pain. She is responsible for the course on behavioural testing in rodents. She taught the workshop Experimental Design in Animal Research.
