News / RISE-Health Integrates Two Research Projects Funded by NORTE 2030
The new research projects have secured total funding of €3.5 million.
The RISE-Health Research Unit is assuming an active role in two new research projects funded by NORTE 2030.
Fernando Schmitt, director of RISE-Health and the RISE Associated Laboratory (RISE-Health@RISE/FMUP), is the coodinator of the project ‘MitOConexão: investigating the Mitochondrial Nexus in Onco-Cardiology (NORTE2030-FEDER-02713500)’, which involves researchers from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP), the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences of the University of Porto (ICBAS-UP) and the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto (FBAUP).
With a budget of 482,000 euros, this team – which includes several specialists from RISE-Health – will investigate mitochondrial dysfunction as a central mechanism in breast cancer and cardiovascular diseases, developing precision medicine and new remote monitoring strategies. It is expected to identify relevant biomarkers and create solutions that will have a positive impact on the lives of cancer and cardiovascular patients.
On the other hand, the “UNorte Health Promotion” project (NORTE2030 – Notice NORTE2030-2024-12) has a budget of around 3 million euros, through which researchers from the University of Porto, the University of Minho – consortium leader – and the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro will focus on integrating physical and digital biobank platforms, boosting research into cardiovascular, neurological, infectious and oncological diseases. The discovery of new drugs and therapies, contributing to the prevention and monitoring of chronic diseases, and promoting active and healthy ageing are some of the objectives of this initiative.
It should be noted that these research projects funded by NORTE 2030 reinforce the role of RISE-Health and its headquarters – FMUP – as active agents of research in Portugal.
