Paulo Pereira, a researcher at the Research Unit RISE-Health, guest associate professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto and director of the Neurosurgery Service at ULS São João, has been appointed president of the Iberolatinoamerican Spine Society (SILACO).

This is the first time that a Portuguese doctor has taken the leadership of SILACO, an organisation comprising 17 scientific associations dedicated to the treatment of spinal disorders, which also includes the Portuguese Society of Spinal Pathology (SPPCV).

Paulo Pereira, who now heads a society representing more than 4,000 specialists, mainly neurosurgeons and orthopaedic surgeons, is a researcher at RISE-Health, where he is part of thematic line 2, dedicated to ‘Neurosciences’, where he is currently conducting his research.

As a researcher, Paulo Pereira focuses on minimally invasive spinal surgery, craniovertebral junction surgery, spinal cord and intradural spine surgery, and percutaneous spinal techniques.
