Hormones, Infection, Inflammation & Metabolism

The Thematic Line 3 – Hormones, Infection, Inflammation & Metabolism focuses on the study of pathophysiological mechanisms, biomarkers of disease initiation, progression, and subtypes, as well as on the response to therapy and its clinical implications in pathological contexts with hormonal, metabolic, infectious or inflammatory component and significant disease burden.

TL3 is based on four multidisciplinary groups, benefiting from cutting-edge laboratories, technologies, and approaches and following a translational perspective, from bench to bedside to bench, in which clinicians and non-clinicians work together to expand knowledge and generate scientific and social impact.

This research line also involves strong collaborations with clinical departments of central university hospitals and primary care units, as well as with biobanks. Finally, TL3 is committed to reaching and engaging the general public and the patient community.

Luís Taborda Barata is a Full Professor of Medicine at the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Beira Interior (UBI) and the Head of the Department of Allergy & Clinical Immunology at Cova da Beira University Hospital Centre.

He graduated in medicine from the University of Coimbra in 1987 and combined his clinical training in immunoallergology (Coimbra Univ. Hospitals/HUC and Royal Brompton Hospital (RHB), in London, from 1990 to 1998. In 1993, he obtained an MSc Degree in Immunology from the University of Porto and, in 1998, a PhD in Medicine (Imperial College, London), with work on mechanisms of human allergic diseases. As a certified Allergist, he moved back to NHLI to study mechanisms of allergy and to RBH as an Honorary Consultant.

He helped to set up a new medical school at UBI, where he has had responsibilities as the first President of the Department of Medical Sciences, the first and current Coordinator of the Health Sciences Research Centre of CICS-UBI, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, President of the CACB – Clinical Academic Centre of Beiras and Director of the medicine course.

In recent years, he has been a member of research assessment panels for various organisations (e.g., Coordinator of a Scientific Council of FCT; representative of Portugal in GARD, WHO; member of the National Council for Science, Technology and Innovation, appointed by the Prime Minister), and has played relevant roles in promoting national and international collaborative projects, while as a researcher he has been involved in the translation of knowledge into policy documents on respiratory and allergic diseases, to contribute to changes in healthcare policies and practices.
