Fausto Pinto

MD. PhD.

Fausto Pinto is President of the Cardiovascular Center of the University of Lisbon (CCUL) and Full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon, of which he was director between 2015 and 2022. He is also the director of the Cardiology Service and the Heart and Vessel Department at the University Hospital Center Lisboa Norte (CHULN).

He completed his cardiology training at the University Hospital Center Lisboa Norte – CHULN (Santa Maria Hospital) and Stanford University Medical School, USA, where he was a Clinical Fellow and Clinical Assistant in the Echocardiography Laboratory, as well as a Fellow in Interventional Cardiology. In 1993, he completed his Doctorate in Medicine and, in 1997, his Aggregation at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon.

Between 2021 and 2022, he was President of the World Heart Federation and President of the European Society of Cardiology between 2014 and 2016, also leading the European Heart Agency between 2016 and 2018.

He is now an honorary member of several international organizations, including the National Academy of Medicine of Brazil and the Japanese Circulation Society.

As a researcher, he has published more than 600 scientific articles and participated in more than 2000 national and, mainly, international conferences. Cardiovascular imaging, an area in which he pioneered the use of intravascular ultrasound in the study of the transplanted heart, ischemic heart disease, interventional cardiology, heart failure, anticoagulation, digital cardiology, and global cardiovascular health, are all part of his research interests.
